SORTA NORMAL GAMES

Privacy Policy

Last updated November 5, 2026

Sorta Normal Games makes party games about someone you love. To do that, you tell us about them. This page explains, in plain words, what we keep, why, who helps us, and what you can do about it.

The short version

  • We use what you and your helpers tell us to make your game. That's the main thing.
  • An AI runs the interview and writes the cards. Our AI provider doesn't train its models on what we send it.
  • No ads. We don't sell your information, and there are no third-party analytics or trackers.
  • We may hand-pick some cards, with names replaced, as examples that help future games. You can switch this off.
  • With an account you can download or delete your data at any time. Games made without one are reviewed after a year without activity, and normally deleted then.
  • Sorta Normal Games is for adults: you need to be 18 or older.
  • Please only share stories the person you're celebrating would be happy to hear at the party.

Who we are

Sorta Normal Games is run by its founder, as a sole proprietor in New Jersey, USA, and is meant for people in the United States. Questions or requests: hello@sortanormalgames.com.

What we keep

Your account. Your email address, your first name if you give it, your light or dark setting, whether learning is on, and when you last signed in.

Your games. Who the game is for (their name and pronoun), the occasion, your name as the creator, the group's vibe, how many players, the game's name and design, and the cards, including the ones you edit, rewrite with an AI suggestion, or delete. During the interview, the AI picks out the stories you tell, and we keep them. Deleted cards and stories you remove are hidden and stay with the game until you delete the game.

Interview conversations (while Sorta Normal Games is in beta). We keep the AI interviews (yours and your helpers') with the game, so we can check the interviewer asks good questions and make it better. Not when learning is switched off for the game, and switching it off deletes them.

Your browser keeps a copy of your game in progress, including the conversation, so you don't lose it if you close the tab (see “Cookies and your browser”).

Helpers. If you invite someone by email, we keep their address with the invite. For each helper we keep the first name they give, the stories they add, whether you kept or removed them, and their account if they have one.

Records of what happened. A simple log of actions (for example “signed in with a code”, “cards made”, “invited a helper”), without anything you typed. For each AI request: which task it was, the AI model, how much text was processed, the cost, and any error. Sign-in requests and the old and new address when you change your email (for the 7-day undo).

Your internet address is used for a short time, in memory only, to stop abuse (for example too many sign-in attempts). We don't store it. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs.

Waitlist. If you join our waitlist, we keep your email address to tell you when we open and to send occasional news and offers.

If you write to us, we keep the conversation, and we may keep a short support note on your account.

About the person you're celebrating

Your game is about a real person who usually doesn't know about it yet (that's the surprise). Their name, pronoun and the stories about them come from you and your helpers. We use them only to make games for you, the creator: we don't contact them, build profiles of them, or use their name for marketing.

Please be kind with what you share:

  • Share what you'd happily say out loud at the party. Funny, warm, a little embarrassing is perfect.
  • Don't share sensitive things: health, sexuality, religion, politics, immigration status, money, addresses, phone numbers, passwords, or anything told to you in confidence.
  • Take extra care with details about children.

If you're the person a game is about, or someone mentioned in one, and you want something removed, write to hello@sortanormalgames.com and we'll help, even if you don't have an account.

How we use it

  • To make your game: run the interview, write and design the cards, let you and your helpers add to them, and make the printable PDF.
  • To run your account: sign-in emails, keeping your games together, helper invites, and telling you when helpers add stories.
  • To send you news and offers from time to time, if you have an account or joined the waitlist. You can unsubscribe whenever you like.
  • To keep Sorta Normal Games working and safe: fixing problems, stopping abuse, and keeping AI costs in check. The people who run Sorta Normal Games can see games and their stories when needed for this, or to help you.
  • To make future games better (“learning”, below).

We don't show ads, and we don't sell your information or share it for advertising. For people in places where the law asks for a reason: we use your information to provide the service you asked for; where it's in everyone's reasonable interest, to keep it safe and improve it (which you can switch off); and to send news you can unsubscribe from.

Learning: “Help make future games better”

A good card teaches us what makes a good card. So we may hand-pick some cards from real games as examples that guide the AI when it writes cards for other people. Before a card becomes an example, we replace the names of the person being celebrated and of the game's creator with a placeholder, and we only pick cards that don't identify anyone. The example library also includes cards from the founder's own family games. While Sorta Normal Games is in beta, we also read interview conversations to improve how the interviewer asks questions.

  • You can switch it off for all your games (in Settings) or for one game (in that game's menu on My games). Switching it off means none of those cards are picked or used as examples, and their saved conversations are deleted. It's on until you switch it off. Made a game without an account? Write to us and we'll switch it off for that game.
  • Deleting a game or your account removes its cards from the example library too.
  • We also note which cards people keep, edit or delete, to see what works. This stays with your game and is deleted with it.

Who sees what, inside the app

  • The game's creator sees the stories helpers add, with their first names.
  • Helpers see what the game is about, and the cards only after the creator marks the game as played. Anyone with a share link can open it and add stories.
  • The people who run Sorta Normal Games can see games when needed to run it or help you (above), and read saved interview conversations to improve the interviewer.

Who helps us

Outside the app, we share information only with these kinds of service providers, which help us run Sorta Normal Games:

WhoWhat they doWhat they see
Our AI providerRuns the interview and writes and designs cardsWhat you and your helpers type, the game details (names, occasion), and example cards
Our hosting providerRuns the website and stores the databaseEverything stored in the app
Email providersSend our emails and hold email sent to usEmail addresses and what the emails say
Backup storageKeeps our encrypted nightly backups (30 days)Only the encrypted copy, which it can’t open

About the AI: our AI provider's terms say it may not train its models on what we send it. It deletes it within 30 days, unless it's flagged for misuse (kept longer to enforce its rules) or the law requires keeping it.

We may also share information if the law requires it, to protect someone's safety, or if Sorta Normal Games is sold or merged (we'd tell you first).

We use these services in the United States, so your information is stored and processed there.

How long we keep things

WhatHow long
Your account and your gamesUntil you delete them
Games made without an accountReviewed after a year without any activity, and normally deleted then
Interview conversations (beta)With the game, while learning is on; deleted when you switch learning off or delete the game. A helper’s also go when they delete their account or switch learning off
WaitlistUntil you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you
Sign-in requests1 day
Being signed in on a deviceUntil you sign out, or 30 days after you signed in
Old and new address after an email changeUntil you delete your account
Records of what happened, and AI usageKept to run the service; when you delete your account, they lose any link to you
BackupsUp to 30 days, so deleted things disappear from backups within 30 days
Choices about invites (“Not for you?”)Kept (only a scrambled version of the address) so we keep honoring them
An invite’s “Not for you?” linkWorks for a year
At our AI providerUp to 30 days (longer only if flagged for misuse or required by law)

When you delete your account, stories you added to someone else's game that they kept stay in their game, shown as “A helper”, without your name or account. Stories they hadn't kept are deleted. If someone invited you by email, your address stays in their list of invites.

Your choices

  • Download your data: Settings → Download my data gives a copy of what we keep about your account and games: your details, games, stories, cards, invites, saved conversations, activity, learning choices, email changes, AI usage and any support notes.
  • Delete one game (on My games) or your whole account (Settings; we'll email you a code first, to be sure it's you).
  • Correct things: edit your name, email and cards in the app. For anything else, write to us.
  • Switch off learning for your account or a game.
  • Sign out everywhere from Settings.
  • Stop news and offers: unsubscribe from any of them, or write to us.

For anything else (a copy of everything we have, a game made without an account, or removing a story about you), write to hello@sortanormalgames.com. We may need to check it's really you, and we'll answer within a month. Depending on where you live, you may have more rights, such as to object or to complain to your data protection authority. We won't treat you differently for using them.

Cookies and your browser

We only use what's needed for the parts of Sorta Normal Games you use, so there's nothing to accept:

NameWhat it’s forHow long
pg_session (cookie)Keeps you signed in30 days after you sign in
pg_login_link (cookie)Makes the sign-in link work only in the browser that asked for it15 minutes

sortanormal_look (browser storage)Light or dark lookUntil you clear it
sortanormal_cards_pending (browser storage)Which cards you’re waiting on, so a reload picks them upUntil they’re ready, you sign out or clear your browser’s storage

No analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and nothing that follows you to other sites. Because we don't track you, we don't respond differently to “Do Not Track” browser settings. Our fonts come from our own site.

Emails

We send sign-in emails, account safety emails (like “your email was changed”), and a note when helpers add stories to your game. When you invite a helper by email, we send them the invite on your behalf; you can send it again. Every invite has a “Not for you?” link (it works for a year; after that, reply to the email) where the person can skip just that invite, stop invites from the person who sent it, or stop invites from anyone. We honor that choice for good. We may also send news and offers from time to time. Every one tells you how to unsubscribe, and we stop within 10 business days.

Age

You need to be 18 or older to make a game, help with one, or have an account. Kids are welcome to play a printed game. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we'll delete it.

Keeping it safe

Connections to Sorta Normal Games are encrypted. Sign-in codes and links are stored only in scrambled (hashed) form, backups are encrypted, and only people we've given admin access can open the admin area. No system is perfect, so please don't put highly sensitive information into a game. If something goes wrong that affects you, we'll tell you as the law requires.

Changes

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change matters, we'll tell account holders by email or in the app before it applies.
